Flux/Flora

"For the first time in many years, during Melbourne's Covid-19 Lockdown, I started painting again.  It seems almost hard to believe that for a long time I used to paint almost every day, and studied at VCA.

Within weeks of tentatively putting the results on Instagram, I was offered a one-off summer show of the Flux series works on paper, along with a collection of my native flower images, the Flora series, at Gibson’s Auctions in Armadale.

The Flux series combines both painting and scanography to create the final images on paper, inspired by my artist wife, Jacquelyn Stephens, who brought her painting studio home to our front room during lockdown.

Following on from my Aquatica show in 2019, the new work is again inspired by the ocean and the past four years I’ve spent surfing practically every weekend with my teenage son – apart from the Lockdown period – when I kept sane by swimming in Port Phillip Bay. Yep, all through the bracing Melbourne winter.

And really, after the dour year we've been through, I wanted to create something positive, with energy, colour, and optimism."
